This session will review pathways for building fire spread at the wildland-urban interface (WUI) identified through a recent Fire Protection Research Foundation project undertaken to inform future standards development. Exposure conditions, including firebrands, radiation, and flame contact as well as a structures and community responses to these features will be covered. Also discussed will be the impact of mitigation efforts, including hardening structures, firefighter response, fuel treatments, community planning and outreach programs such as FireWise. The results of a gap analysis, identifying key areas for future research and development will also be outlined in the presentation.
