My research follows the family from Selters and Meudt in Hessen to their 1850 arrival in Cleveland. Some associated families are Lowensteins, Fuldheims, Heilbergs, and Steuers. I follow them through their participation in the Civil War, their business and civic life in Cleveland, including the family patriarch, Meyer Strauss, the first Jewish centenarian of Cleveland. Although not the first Jewish family in Cleveland, they were perhaps the largest.
