For organizations to succeed in their transition from volume- to value-based care, they must ensure that their physicians are highly engaged. Physicians typically are the highest paid group of employees in a health care organization. In 2015, Spectrum Health embarked on a journey to design and implement a physician compensation model intended to align its physicians’ daily work with its strategic imperatives of increasing reliability, affordability and access.

This presentation will outline Spectrum Health’s innovative approach to physician compensation, with a particular focus on the principles of the model, process road maps, financial sustainability and stakeholder involvement. Spectrum Health’s goal is for physicians to worry more about patients and less about compensation. With that in mind, the organization’s physician and finance leaders will describe how careful planning and physician input led to the model’s effective launch and its ongoing success in refocusing this important aspect of physicians’ work life.
