Plenary IV - Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: Clinical Guideline and Updates

Stevens Smith, PhD

Tobacco use/dependence is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and globally. There is a substantial evidence base for the efficacy of behavioral and medication treatments for smoking cessation. These approaches are highlighted in the 2008 Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline, "Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence."

Conference attendees will learn evidence-based behavioral and medication approaches to treating tobacco use and dependence. Attendees also will learn how to assess tobacco use/dependence and ascertain patient motivation for quitting tobacco use; and, for patients motivated to quit, how to provide appropriate interventions. In addition, the evidence for hypnosis as a treatment for smoking cessation will be reviewed along with new developments in cessation treatment. Approaches for intervening with patients not motivated to quit using tobacco will also be discussed. Lastly, recommendations for intervening with special populations such as tobacco users with psychiatric comorbidities will be discussed.
